Mashed Potato Mountain

People eat potatoes in a lot of different ways. Baked, steamed, fried and more. But one of the best ways to make potatoes is to mash them. Sound good? Let’s mash some potatoes!

Categories: Creative and Maker Play

Target age: 4 and up

Skill level: N/A

Materials: Stuff you probably have at home

Prep time: 1 to 30 minutes

What You’ll Need

  • potatoes
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 25 g (2 tbsp) butter
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 pinches of white pepper
  • 10 crayons (different colors if you have them)
  • a potato masher

The Activity

  • Pick up as many potatoes as you have crayons

  • Peel the potatoes

Or, you can ask a grown-up to do it because peeling can be a little boring and very hard. While a grown-up is peeling the potatoes, you can draw a picture with the crayons. Maybe you’ll draw a picture of the bored grown-up peeling potatoes. It will be a masterpiece!

  • Boil the potatoes in salted water

You can ask the same grown-up to boil the water. Once the water is boiling, you can help the grown-up carefully put the potatoes in one at a time. Plunk! Plunk! Plunk!

  • Boiling the potatoes will take around 15 minutes

During that time you can pretend you are not allowed to touch the floor. Imagine the floor is made of hot mashed potatoes! Get up on a chair or a table (something not near the boiling water!) and try not to touch the floor. For the rest of the potato cooking time, work on building a path made from different things from around the house and jump, jump, jump!

  • Pling! Has it been 15 minutes already?

The floor is now safe and the potatoes are ready. You can get back to cooking. After the grown-up pours the boiling water in the sink, you can add the milk and the butter to the pot. Here comes the fun part. You get to mash the potatoes. All of them! Make sure you switch arms if you get tired.

Once you’ve finished mashing and mashing and mashing, stir the potatoes and eat!
