Meet Kanoka
Age 11, Japan
What's for Lunch?
Kanoka's mom made her lunch, and she ate it at cram school. The content of Kanoka's lunch box changes every day. "It's always exciting to open my lunch box," she said. "I wonder what's for lunch tomorrow."
What’s for lunch today? Is it an everyday lunch?
Shaun the Sheep rice ball is made with rice, seaweed and cheese. The bush is made with broccoli. Other parts are fried egg, sausage, Chinese fried pepper and steak and fruits (kiwi, watermelon and grapes). It’s pretty much the same. My lunch is always made up of a wide variety of food stuff and very colorful. But Shaun the Sheep appears only once in a while.
If you could change anything about this lunch, what would you change?
I wish Mom had put mayonnaise on the broccoli.
What was the best thing about this lunch?
I loved Shaun the Sheep rice ball. It was sooooo cute.
I Get Around
Kanoka took her photos on her way to a workshop at school.
Is this your usual mode of transportation? If not, how do you usually get around?
Yes! I have to walk to school. Students and parents are not allowed to take bicycles to school.
Did you see anything interesting or unusual as you were getting around on this day?
The most interesting thing was I played tag with my brother as we head for school.
Is there anything else you want to tell us about getting around on this day?
I met some of my friends heading to the workshop.
My Style
Kanoka chooses her outfits herself "with a little bit of Mom's advice." Her personal style is "simple and pretty." Today's outfit was a combination of her favorite stuff!
Why did you choose to wear this outfit today?
It’s one of my favorites! My grandma hand-made it for me! Cool, isn’t it?
Would you say this is pretty much how you dress every day? Is there anything unusual about this outfit?
I like to wear various kinds of outfits. I often wear a T-shirt and pants to school cause I like to play outside during recess, but I love to wear dresses, especially during summer! It’s light and cool.
What was your favorite part of this outfit? Why?
My grandma made it for me!
My Happy Place
Kanoka's special place is her backyard, where she goes once every day.
How would you describe your special place?
We have a very small backyard, but my family grow many plants, mostly edible plants.
Why is this place special to you?
We get most of the vegetables we eat during the summer from our garden. It’s fun to go the garden and harvest vegetables.
How do you feel when you are there?
I feel happy when harvesting but I upset when I get many mosquito bites. There are soooooo many mosquitoes in our backyard.
Do you want to tell us anything else about your special place?
I wish there were no mosquitoes there and I wish it were always summer in my backyard so that I can harvest summer vegetables all the time.
